The Science

In 1982 a New Zealand scientist made a remarkable discovery about the healing properties of a unique honey called Manuka.

Because of its long isolation from the rest of the world and its island biogeography, New Zealand has extraordinary flora and fauna. Manuka (Leptospermum scoparium) is an evergreen tree, part of the tea tree family, and native to New Zealand.

Dr Peter Molan MBE, Professor of Biological Sciences and Director of the Honey Research Unit (University of Waikato, New Zealand), is the biochemist who discovered the active property in Manuka honey. It was this discovery that sparked his dedication to researching Manuka honey as therapeutic substance for the treatment of a wide range of ailments.
